We need to create multiple versions of ourselves to get off this planet!
The Alters is an ambitious sci-fi survival game with a unique twist. You play as Jan Dolski, the lone survivor of a crash-landed expedition on a hostile planet. To survive, you must form a new crew for your mobile base. Using a substance called Rapidium, you create alternative versions of Jan—THE ALTERS—each one shaped by a different crucial decision from the protagonist’s past.

Now onto the REVIEW!
Graphics
These graphics are incredible. The level of detail in the environment and more importantly the face is amazing. The facial expressions are so realistic. The glow of some areas in the land. It’s a pretty gorgeous looking game.
Controls Learning Curve
The controls aren’t too bad. The “prologue” takes you through a tutorial. Which is easy to understand. The controls are simple enough. The only thing that bugged me a little was the running button was RB…. when I’m so used to just clicking the left stick. It doesn’t hurt my review of it at all. But it was just a little weird for me.
Storyline
The story here is super interesting. I’m not going to spoil anything for you, don’t worry. But essentially you need to create multiple versions of yourself in order to survive and gather materials to get off a planet that’s in imminent danger.
Gameplay
There’s a few mechanics in The Alters that really caught my eye. The base building being the first. You build your base in a large circular spaceship. When you want to build theres a grid for the center of the circle and you fit the modules in the allowed spaces. Loved it. Next I liked that the game uses your dialogue choices as how the other Alters will react and treat you in the story. Finally, the tools you use have some pretty awesome animations. From the workshop inside the base to setting up outposts. It looks great.
Replayability
I could see there being a significant amount of replayability here. With the different branches of Alters. The dialogue choices. The survival aspect alone is enough to replay the game. Setting up a more efficient base. Anything like that.
Final Thoughts
I went into The Alters knowing very little. This game was pleasantly surprising. The unique mechanics and intense story really have drawn me into this game. Not to mention the impressive graphics. I think this is definitely worth your time if you enjoy story driven survival. Give it a shot!
