We're playtesting the multiplayer PVE extraction game Polaris!
Team up and take flight in this sci-fi co-op shooter with fully destructible environments. Soar through dynamic open levels using powerful abilities, master advanced weapons and vehicles, and lay waste to the armies of a hostile colonizing threat - defend your home worlds!
Check out the game on Steam:
I think it’s fair to not give this one a rating just yet. As this is a super early playtest. BUT I still want to break it down and discuss some things this game needs.
SO here we go..
Graphics
This game has a very unique art syle. Honestly, the art style is what caught my eye when finding this game. I really enjoy the cell-shading type of look to the game. It gives it a more colorful and bright look to it. Something I really like.
Controls Learning Curve
Flying is the main thing that’ll take some time to get used to here. The hovering and switching to flight mode feel a little rough. Especially when you first start the game. Obviously the other elements of shooting and extracting aren’t difficult to pick up. But I feel like flight needs to be a little smoother when you’re just using the player jetpack. The flight with the aircraft worked as I expected an aircraft to work.
Storyline
It does seem like there’s a storyline with the game. It’s still very early so I haven’t seen the full picture of what that is yet. Mainly, just the tutorial video when you start the game.
Gameplay
This is a great foundation with being this early in the process. I definitely like that the environment seems to use the voxel type format where EVERYTHING is destructible. Having the devastator explode and destroy the build and crater the ground was pretty awesome to experience.
Replayability
This is going to be one of those grindy replayable games I feel. But so far it’s enjoyable especially with friends. It has a sort of Helldivers feel, where you choose a mission and difficulty then launch into the mission. So absolutely yes.
Game needs
Customizable Apparel - This could be with in-game currency and a premium shop so players can collect all different items to customize their character
Buffs - Having maybe two buff slots to help your character in a mission. Could include things like shields, more points for requisition items, or extra damage.
Loot! - Having chests or lockers around the map that can be opened for weapons, items, or collectables I feel like is going to be a MUST for this game. Bonus if some things can be extracted with to use in the next mission.
Loadouts - Discussing everything above would go great with a loadout before launching into the mission. Choosing preferred weapons, buffs, or armor.
Final Thoughts
There’s definitely a solid game here to expand on. We’ll see where it goes next. But being a mainly PVE guy, I love the chance to play more PVE games that are done well. Polaris is headed in the right direction. What they add in the future will ultimately decide how well this game does. We discussed just a few additions that would help the game feel more polished.
No rating today. I don’t think its fair to give a rating to such an early version of the game.
